Learn some words for law and order


guilty If you are guilty of a crime, then you did it.

innocent If you are innocent of a crime, then you didn't do it.

illegal If you do something illegal the police will catch you. For example, killing people is illegal.

commit Commit is the verb used for crime. You commit a crime.

jury The jury is the people (often 12 people) who decide if you are guilty or innocent.

investigate Investgate is a verb. It means to find out about. For example, the police investigated the crime.

evidence Evidence is the things that police find to help them investigate. For example, fingerprints and letters.

prove Prove is a verb. It means 'to show without doubt'.

lawyer A lawyer is someone who helps prove that you are innocent, or prove that you are guilty.

convict A convict is someone who is in jail.

capital Capital means death. For example, in China murder is a capital crime; if you commit murder you will be killed.

break Break is a verb we use for law or rule. You break the law.
